Soak up the sun once more in the Algarve or on the Costa Brava, start the cycling season on Mallorca, enjoy Greek wine on Crete or visit the historic sites of Sicily. What still seems like a far-away wish today could soon become reality. The right flights from Memmingen are already available for booking. The summer flight schedule, which comes into effect on Sunday, 28 March, offers around such 40 connections.
However: “Never before has a new flight schedule had so many question marks hanging over it, while also being so full of energy and dynamism,” explains Allgäu Airport Managing Director, Ralf Schmid. The two airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air currently operate around 40 flight connections in their summer flight schedules. But all those involved can only see so far ahead at the moment. “We anticipate slow recovery towards the summer holidays,” says Schmid, “but this all hinges on the situation regarding vaccinations, the incidence figures and the prevailing political climate, both here and in the respective target regions.” The first signs of recovery could be seen as early as Whitsun.Despite everything, Memmingen Airport’s summer flight timetable is something to savour for travellers. From 28 March, Ryanair will be flying to Mallorca, which once again appears very appealing for many holidaymakers now that travel restrictions have been lifted. Due to high demand, the airline has added extra flights for Easter. Seats can also already be booked when Ryanair resumes flights to Alicante in Spain and Thessaloniki in Greece from 1 May. Flights are scheduled to take off for Crete and Faro in Portugal on 2 May. Flights to Sardinia, Mallorca and Zadar could also be resumed. The Finnish city of Lappeenranta will be a new destination on the flight schedule from 1 July. The Corsica specialist Rhomberg Reisen is planning to resume its weekly flight from Memmingen to Calvi from 2 May.
As in recent months, the airline Wizz Air remains on course and is once again set to fly to numerous destinations in Eastern Europe from Memmingen. Even in times of crisis, these connections were considered important air connections for medical personnel, harvest workers, students, relatives and friends. Wizz Air no longer sees itself solely as an Eastern European specialist, but is establishing an increasing number of routes in Western Europe. From Memmingen, it also serves connections to Larnaca in Cyprus and Catania in Sicily.
Those responsible expect an initial peak in travel activity in August or the autumn holidays. “However, it remains difficult to predict how this peak, which we record every year, will materialise,” explains Ralf Schmid. For 2021, he expects just over one million passengers in Memmingen. Ryanair and Wizz Air’s 2021/22 winter flight schedule is now also available for booking. Christmas flights to friends and relatives can already be made a reality here. Winter travellers can travel to Fuerteventura and Hurghada with Corendon. And you could even fulfil a dream by heading to the fairytale-like destination of Marrakech. The first flight to the former capital of Morocco is scheduled to take off from Memmingen on 3 November.
