The 13th brought her luck! Because when Kassandra Sunjic boarded a Ryanair plane with her family in Dubrovnik today, Tuesday 13 August, she had no idea that she would leave Memmingen Airport hours later with a bouquet of flowers and vouchers for free parking and a flight with Ryanair. The 33-year-old paediatric nurse from Denkendorf in Baden-Württemberg is the 20 millionth passenger to have taken off or landed at the leading low-cost airport in southern Germany in its 17-year history. Ryanair and the airport are also celebrating another anniversary.
20 million passengers in 17 years! “We never dared to dream of this when we started our work,” reports Airport Managing Director Ralf Schmid, who has been instrumental in guiding the fortunes of the airport since its early days. “Despite all the doubts and resistance, we have established ourselves as a stable player in German aviation.” The fact that FMM, the international abbreviation for Germany’s highest commercial airport, is now ranked tenth in the hit parade of national airports is further confirmation of the good work done by the entire team. Schmid also thanked the airport’s airline partners – first and foremost the airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air. On 29 April 2009, the Irish airline Ryanair started operations in Memmingen, for which it now has four aircraft permanently stationed at the airport. Only recently, the airline was able to set its own record here. It carried its 10 millionth passenger to and from Memmingen.
Memmingen Airport has managed to double the number of passengers in less than six years. In December 2018, Memmingen welcomed passenger number ten million.By 2024, the airport management is certain that the number of passengers will easily pass the three million mark.New services – the most recent example being the new routes from Memmingen to Budapest & Manchester – and the fact that airlines are expanding their capacities on popular routes are constantly contributing to this.
