For centuries, it has been the long-awaited destination of all those who walk the “Camino de Santiago”. But Santiago de Compostela is not only a place of longing for pilgrims around the globe. The capital of Galicia is also the latest destination that can be reached from Memmingen with Ryanair.
The legendary cathedral is one of the world-famous sights at home in the northern Spanish city. According to tradition, the remains of St James the Apostle are buried here, and were rediscovered in the 9th century. One additional highlight is the entire historic city centre, which today is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The busiest street in the historic centre of Santiago is “Rúa do Franco”, which leads directly to the square in front of the cathedral. Here you will find numerous restaurants serving Galician specialities. With La Coruña on the Atlantic Ocean and its old fishing and trading port, as well as the tourist centre of “Sanxenxo”, there are other fantastic destinations nestled in the vicinity of a city comprising around 100,000 inhabitants, whose airport is just ten kilometres away.
From 27 March next year, Ryanair will connect Memmingen Airport with Santiago de Compostela twice a week (Sunday and Thursday). “The new destination rounds off our fantastic Spanish offer,” explains Airport Sales Manager Marcel Schütz. Up to now, only destinations in the east and south of the country have been on the current flight schedule.
