Performance appraisal for 2022: almost two million passengers

Memmingen Airport was able to put the turbulence of two years of Coronavirus years behind it, and continue its growth course in 2022. In the previous year, the airport recorded a total of 1,991,654 million passengers, exceeding the 2019 record by 268,885 passengers or almost 16 per cent. A significant jump above the two million mark is expected for the current year.

While the airport’s performance for 2021 was still characterised to a significant extent by Coronavirus-related operating restrictions – 980,503 passengers were recorded – 2022 was dominated by a period of recovery. “People finally wanted to travel again,” explains Airport Managing Director, Ralf Schmid. “There was a lot of catching up to do. Not only in terms of tourism, but above all for visits from relatives and friends.” Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, Memmingen Airport was able to build on previously achieved growth rates and recorded an increase of 15.6 per cent with 1.99 million passengers (2019: 1.72 million). “We are delighted with our fantastic growth,” emphasises Schmid, “which we have achieved thanks to our dedicated team and our robust airline partners.”

In addition to the desire shared among many passengers to travel, the range of flights offered by the airlines also grew, as they continuously increased their capacities and added new destinations to their programmes. Ryanair stationed a third aircraft in Memmingen in autumn 2022. As a result, the new destinations Malta, Naples, Valencia, Corfu and Krakow in Poland will appear on the flight schedule this summer. The travel group TUI has also recognised the potential in Memmingen, and will be offering a new direct connection to Crete from 8 June, which it is combining with numerous local offers to create attractive travel packages.

Over 50 destinations spanning 24 countries
This year, those responsible are certain that Memmingen Airport will easily pass the two million mark. An increase of 15 per cent and a total of 2.3 million passengers are expected to fly to and from Memmingen. This is due in no small way to the two major airport partners Ryanair and Wizz Air, which are constantly increasing frequencies on numerous existing routes. This year, Memmingen Airport is offering a total of over 50 destinations in 24 countries with five airlines.

Memmingen Airport – Amazing job opportunities
Growth also ensures that the airport will continue to generate fantastic new jobs. This year, the 237 employees at Flughafen Memmingen GmbH and Allgate GmbH are to receive around 50 new colleagues. “We need reinforcements,” emphasises Managing Director, Ralf Schmid, “and we look forward to welcoming motivated new employees who will continue our growth trajectory along with us.” The infrastructure is also to be adapted in several stages by 2026 to meet the strong demand and increasing regulatory requirements. Among other things, the check-in area and the upper floor in the arrivals hall will be expanded, and the upper floor in the terminal will be extended.

In addition to the two aircraft previously based in Memmingen, Ryanair has now stationed a third, thus enabling new flight connections to be established. Like Wizz Air, the airline is also increasing frequencies on existing routes.
